Female Victim Knifed in Birmingham Bus Shelter Attack Dies
The female victim stabbed repeatedly to her neck area during a random assault at a bus stop in Birmingham has passed away, police have confirmed.
The deceased woman, who was 34, was targeted on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 21:00 GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
The suspect, twenty-one, appeared before Birmingham court Monday morning, facing charges for the attack.
Originally charged of attempted murder however after the victim's passing the charge has been updated to murder.
Police Response
The force said police personnel will remain around the city centre through Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, identified as a Black British national, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, trainers with a backpack.
Incident Location
The stabbing happened outside the Bullring shopping centre, across from primary access point of New Street railway station.
Police said they classified it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating they were working to understand the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, recounted paramedic and police activity after completing her shift around 10 PM on Friday.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances around 9 PM.
"A lot of my colleagues use transit services, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk essentially, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, 25, resident of Stoke, mentioned visiting the city quite frequently visiting his partner who lives in the city, and was concerned about what had happened.
"It makes me worried about my partner," he stated.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... and to think something completely unprovoked [happened], understandably, it's horrible."
