Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
