Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then discovered many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report early analysis suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are presently not aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were working "to solve the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior official stated the incident made him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing attack in 2020," he stated on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
